Mary Jo has been a pioneer in the field of Equine Assisted Services for Wounded, Ill, and Injured Military Personnel. Her groundbreaking work at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was the inspiration for EIP.

As a therapeutic riding instructor since 1997 and driving instructor since 2005,Mary Jo Beckman has noted the benefits and challenges of riding or driving for individuals with disabilities.
